Because it resides in the mostly sunny southern California coast, Oceanside has plenty of opportunities for its residents to enjoy the warm outdoors. In total, Oceanside has 50+ parks to be enjoyed year-round. These parks range from small neighborhood parks with play structures and picnic areas to large areas with multipurpose fields, tennis courts, baseball fields, and basketball courts. Oceanside also has six golf courses to be enjoyed by the locals. So if a day at the park is not leisurely enough, the golf courses are a great alternative. But for those who enjoy all things nature and love a little challenge, trails are open for hikers, bikers, and nature walkers. There are three major trails for trail-blazers to choose from, depending on preferred means of transportation on the trail and favored scenery.
For those who love skateboarding, Oceanside has approximately five skate parks. Skating has been part of Oceanside culture for many years and the Parks & Recreation Division has made it a point to provide safe and interesting skate parks for local residents. Oceanside residents also have access to two swim centers, which are open to the public but also available for private rentals.
All of these awesome recreational opportunities do not even include the pacific coast and ocean that is essentially the reason for Oceanside?s name. The Oceanside Pier is a place where surfers congregate to catch the waves. There are plenty of ocean and beach activities and events to enjoy year round! Beyond the water, MainStreet Oceanside has many shops and dining areas for shoppers and foodies to discover. There is a weekly farmers market held in this area as well, promoting local artisans and businesses.
Arts & Culture
There are a few museums and historical locations to explore in Oceanside. The California Surf Museum features art capturing the lifestyle and sport of surfing! The Oceanside Museum of Art has engaging exhibitions and programs to inspire and educate residents. Several national and global artists are featured there from time to time.
Oceanside Theatre and the Star Theatre Company are devoted to providing the public with interesting and relevant theatre shows. They strive to encourage and improve the artistic growth of the community, give local artists new creative opportunities, and offer educational theatre programs.
First Friday Art Walk is an annual event that happens in spring. This event serves to promote the vibrant art community through pop-up art galleries, custom jewelry, live music, dance performances. The Old Mission San Luis Rey mission resides in Oceanside and is considered to be a National Landmark. The mission has a museum, a cemetery open to the public, a gift shop, several programs, and hosts a number of community fundraising events.

Oceanside students are served by six different school districts depending on their address. But the local Oceanside Unified School District consists of about 15 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 2 high schools.
